Julie Janson
Julie Janson is a Burruberongal woman of Darug Aboriginal nation, living on the South coast of NSW.
She is a novelist, playwright, and poet.
Julie’s first novel Benevolence (2020), also published in the US and UK, was shortlisted for the Barbara Jefferis Award (2022) and nominated for the NIB Literary Award and the Voss Literary Award. Janson’s Madukka the River Serpent, an Indigenous crime novel, was published in 2022. Her second historical novel, Compassion, will be released in March 2024. Julie is the recipient of the Oodgeroo Noonuccal Poetry Prize and the Judith Wright Poetry Prize. Her plays have been produced in Australia, USA and Indonesia.
She has worked as a lecturer in Aboriginal programs and
teacher in Sydney and remote Aboriginal communities over
the last 30 years. Julie is married with three children and
four grandchildren.
